The so-called 22@ district is today the home of innovative architecture and the place where interesting initiatives in terms of sustainability and urban transformation are being developed. Poble Nou is an example of a working-class and industrial neighborhood that has become a fashionable district.
The so-called 22@ district, located in the district of San Martí, is an area of some 200 hectares, and today the most dynamic center of innovation, technology and business in Barcelona.
The transformation of this former industrial zone in certain decadence into a mixed district that combines office buildings, non-polluting productive spaces, commercial and hotel zones, residential fabric and educational and cultural facilities by leading international architects such as Herzog and De Meuron, Lapeña-Torres, Dominique Perrault, OAB or Jean Nouvel, has been successfully carried out, although the gentrification processes of former popular areas, such as Poble Nou, concentrate much of the criticism.
The itinerary shows the evolution of an industrial and working class area, today an important business center, a center of knowledge and education and also a territory where the desire to maintain the memory of the neighborhood and community management spaces, some of them former factories, has often had to be defended against all kinds of pressures.
The tour, which includes 22@ South and 22@North, in full development, will focus on the sustainability and resource-saving strategies integrated into many of the buildings and facilities, as well as urban-scale installations, such as the general air conditioning network Districlima. Some of the so-called Superïlles del Poblenou, an urban concept designed to promote greater pacification of public space, will also be visited, as well as the Glòries park, which also arouses different opinions among the population.
