Lluís Domènech i Montaner's Hospital de Santa Creu i Sant Pau (1905-1910) and Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Familia (1882-ongoing) are works of great scope and uniqueness, both with a history that reflects the ambitions, contrasts and tensions of the times in which they were conceived.
This itinerary runs through the Eixample Dret, Guinardó and Camp de l’Arpa and focuses on two of the most recognized works of the main architects of Catalan modernism: the Hospital de Santa Creu i Sant Pau, by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and the Sagrada Familia, a temple to which Antoni Gaudí devoted much effort throughout his career. The use and public perception of these complexes has changed over time, and today they are important tourist icons worldwide, but they are still buildings that have not lost their capacity to evoke and surprise.
However, we do not propose here a standard tourist tour of the two monuments, but a route that can be extended to the surrounding neighborhoods, to discover impressive viewpoints over the city, interesting contemporary architecture (by architects such as Bonell i Gil, EMBT, Boix i Oliveras), libertarian residential blocks, nineteenth-century palaces, rehabilitated factories and even some works by J. M. Jujol, Gaudí’s collaborator architect.
The expiatory temple of La Sagrada Família was begun in 1882 and is still unfinished. Antoni Gaudí was intensely involved in its design and construction from 1883 until his death in 1926.
Three tour options are proposed: the first of 2h30 min focused on the interior visit of the Sagrada Familia or the modernist enclosure of Sant Pau with an exterior architectural visit of the surroundings; the second of 4h of duration, which includes the interior of the 2 works and the exterior visit of the Planells house (1925) by J. M. Jujol, and the last one of full day, which combines the interior visit of the 2 works with an architectural and landscape route in the area of Sant Pau, Guinardó and Camp de l’Arpa.M. Jujol, and a final full-day visit, which combines the interior visit of the 2 works with an architectural and landscape route in the area of Sant Pau, Guinardó and Camp de l’Arpa with works by contemporary architects. In the full day visits, the itinerary can be completed with a visit to Park Güell and/or the Finca de San Salvador designed by Jujol on request (on request). The itinerary does not include entrance fees, which will be confirmed and reserved in advance.
